The distillery was founded in 1888 beside the sugar mills of the Bundaberg region, using molasses from nearby cane crushed for sugar, and the surrounding area's cane industry gave it its start. It became widely known for Bundaberg Rum, nicknamed Bundy, and is owned by Diageo, which bought the company in 2000. Under the Bundaberg name the company produces a range of dark and aged rum, along with ready-to-drink mixes, and has a large visitor centre in the town.
