Ron Abuelo is made by Varela Hermanos at the Pese estate on the Azuero peninsula in Herrera province. The company dates from 1908, and the Abuelo rum brand was introduced in the 1930s. The Varela family still owns it, and it is the largest rum producer in Panama. The estate grows its own cane and runs an adjacent sugar mill. Rums are distilled in column stills and aged in used American oak, with the Anejo and Gran Reserva blends forming the core of the range.
