Ron Montero is a family distillery at Motril on the Costa Tropical in Granada province, in a region where sugar cane was grown for centuries. Cited sources date it to 1963, when Francisco Montero Martin founded it. A nephew bought it in 2007. Molasses is distilled in a column still and the rum is aged in oak. It is among the best known rum producers on the Spanish mainland, with tours by appointment. Claims that it is Europe's oldest rum distillery are promotional.
