Hacienda Santa Teresa lies in the Aragua valley near El Consejo, southwest of Caracas, and has been a cane estate since 1796. It has made rum since the late 19th century and is still controlled by the Vollmer family. The signature rum, 1796, is a solera blend aged in used bourbon barrels. The distillery is also known for Project Alcatraz, a social programme that began by turning local gang members into rugby players and workers.
